Celtics finally move on from Ainge. I really think this guy botched all those assets they had. Should have gone for more than just Kyrie.

Could've given a lot of picks away in exchange for some difference makers. Timing wasn't always on his side either though |

Timing wasn't always on his side either though I think I said it in the last thread, but it seemed to be that Ainge's expiration date had come. In my eyes, the GM job is typically one you want with fresh ideas every half dozen years or so. The game is changing every so often and your GM typically tends to stay behind the natural progression and try to continue their old ways. Then when they try to adjust, you realize they aren't fit for the new "modern" era. Ainge was GOAT at accumulating all those assets and winning all those trades. But once it came time to trade those assets for immediate stars and contributors, he played hardball and only got Kyrie out of it. Then to make matters worse he lost Kyrie too. It's going to be interesting to see what happens in OKC. Their GM has now done an amazing job and having an obscene amount of draft picks. But now is also the time to start trading those assets for disgruntled stars. I wonder if he falls into the trap of trying to recreate a Durant/Westbrook/Harden draft trio again. I do not think trying to go that route will work today. |

IMO the way to build a team today:
- Don't tank. It doesn't work. Flattened lottery odds make it even harder. Nothing wrong with getting lucky and winning the lottery, but you shouldn't be purposely looking to lose. I believe the last #1 overall pick to win the title with the team that drafted them is Tim Duncan in 1997. Typically if you pick #1, your organization is lacking a lot and the player eventually leaves you in free agency. In the last 10 drafts, only half are still with the team that drafted them. And those 5 came in the last 6 drafts.
- Focus on stars. If you have a star, find another one. Keep that guy happy. Trading him for assets probably will not work, as the assets will never be as good as the star. Role players aren't too important. They will come to you if you have the stars to inflate their stats and get paid elsewhere the upcoming off-season.
- The idea of cap space has evolved. In the past you would line up your contracts to all expire a same off-season to make a splurge. The reality is, you can always have cap space every off-season if you don't have bad contracts. This gives you so much flexibility. For example, let's say KAT is available this off-season and a guy like Lillard is a free agent (he isn't, but free agency sucks this year so I have no current example). You're the Wizards and have Bradley Beal but no stars besides him. In this scenario, we ignore Westbrook and Bertrans' awful contracts. Lillard is not interested in signing with you in free agency because you only have Beal. Work a deal with the Wolves for KAT trading all your assets. Get Lillard on board for a team with Beal and KAT. When Lillard agrees, you trade for KAT then trade off all your other role players for whatever you can get (2nd round picks, 1st rounders, it doesn't matter, whatever is on the table). If the contract is good, someone will be willing to take it on for you. Now in reality, the Wizards cannot have such an off-season because they are handicapped with Westbrook and Bertrans' contract.
- Individual defense is overrated, team defense is what matters now. Ball moves around so much now, you want the right system and guys capable of playing in a system. Ability to shut down a player 1 on 1 isn't really that important anymore.
- Point guards don't matter. You want the ball to spend the most time in your best players hands. Having a playmaking point guard pound the ball while your best players wait for it is not a winning move anymore. Focus on getting the best players you can, bringing the ball up the court isn't some super limited skill.
- Versatility is key. So much switching on defense now, you want guys that can play multiple positions.
